it’s been a strange week. buried one friend and married two others within 24 hours of each other. the memorial service for dennis was a good reminder of the impact one person can make- like it or not, we are all connected. the wedding was beautiful, and thankfully, my officiating did not screw things up. being with friends i don’t regularly see is always a good thing. as i was contemplating the bittersweet tension between mourning and celebration, i looked at the calendar and realized that christmas is in less than a week. what the?!
weeks ago, i had originally intended to post something about advent, the beginning of the church calendar and an important tradition in the church year. sadly, it seems that i haven’t been able to create the sacred space necessary to really observe advent as it should be- focused on anticipation, preparation, hope, and joy. instead, it seems as if christmas snuck up behind me, jumped on my back, and yelled, “surprise!” thanks, christmas.
so here i am, prepping for a christmas eve sermon about the miracle of the incarnation as a mysterious contradiction between humanity and divinity, with christmas on my back. what just happened?
