maybe i’m just tired from finishing up the quarter at spu, but i came across this blog post and couldn’t stop laughing at the fobsta and rice-boy descriptions. granted, stuff asian people like isn’t quite as clever as stuff white people like, but hey, asians are great at copying things and making them almost as good.
so i can admit it- at one time in my distant past, i may have been known to associate with some who might have been mistakenly labeled as rice-boys, but it’s an easy mistake to make. it’s hard for the average observer to tell if that huge muffler is a coffee can or a custom race exhaust, so that’s no one’s fault. but i still maintain that i was a true “import automotive enthusiast” and not a rice-burning rice-rocket driver trying to race everyone with my neon-equipped, stickered-out, giant-winged 1.5L SOHC civic cx.
and for the record, i consider myself an asian-american, but not as twinkied as gary lee has described here. there are tons of fobs and superfobs in my neighborhood, along with a fobsta pool hall that does indeed attract local tabs. yaps who escape my ‘hood (as a sign of success) join the twinkies who are already in the suburbs. maybe one day i will be fobulous…

Comment by LK June 4, 2008 @ 9:39 pmthe incriminating photos have been conveniently “lost,” but i do have archives of most of the cars i’ve owned. here they are in order (each one has a story…):

]
2. 1984 honda accord (a classic)
3. 1990 honda accord lx coupe (first love)
4. 1997 honda prelude type sh (best handling fwd)

7. 1997 infiniti qx4 (for the wife- and for moving)
8. 1990 honda accord LX sedan (full circle, on a budget)
9. 1995 acura integra gsr coupe (a classic, sadly stolen)
[end of honda/acura era due to repeated theft
10. 2001 vw jetta gls vr6 (for the wife, but she changed her mind)
11. 1994 nissan altima gxe (for the wife- unfortunately a lemon)
12. 1996 mazda mx-6 ls v6 (surprisingly good)

Comment by david June 4, 2008 @ 11:26 pmWhy is it that people believe Asian only means East Asian? What about the rest of us?
Comment by Priya June 5, 2008 @ 6:32 ampriya- not that this was their intent, but i think some of the stereotypes apply to south asians as well, no? i’m assuming that people don’t make the distinction for the same reason we rarely specify between east-african and west-african (as opposed to african-american)- because culturally we’re just barely moving beyond the term “oriental” as we once did with “negro.”
Comment by david June 5, 2008 @ 9:30 amI place somewhere between Twinkie and Asian-Am although another category should be made a step-below the YAP for underachieving asians in this hilarious scheme…
Comment by Wayne Park June 5, 2008 @ 12:42 pmI think the difference of quality between the two is that while “Stuff White People Like” seems to be written for white people, “Stuff Asian People Like” also seems to be written for white people as well. So the humor really isn’t as funny.
